For the 2008 edition of the Soundwalk festival of art and sound, Julia Holter composed a new work which crossed the roles of performer, artist, composer and art object in a unique kind of living sculpture. Posing herself as the mysterious agent of a ritual of measurement, Holter created a live engagement in a scene typically populated by interactive software and machines.
Following a series of simple instructions (which in this case double as both interaction design and score), she greets visitors with a series of tones and proclamations as they weigh sand borrowed from the nearby shores of Long Beach. As each new visitor adds sand to the basket of a hanging scale, the needle points out a higher number, and Holter, attentive to the scales’ progress, chimes a carefully selected tone on harmonium and bell. Each tone serves as accompaniment for her declaration of the increasing weight.
Over the course of a day-long performance, Holter has marked, in speech, the participation of nearly a hundred visitors and as many pounds of the sand that has flowed through.
