Tiny Creatures Last Show Ever

After three years of dedication to art and music and community events,Tiny Creatures will be celebrating the closing of its doors with its last and 12th art opening event, entitled “You Are Invited To Be The Last Tiny Creature,” with over two dozen artists and performers, January 10th, 2009.

The intimate and idiosyncratic space in Echo Park will be transformed by over 20 participants from Los Angeles’ protean alternative art and music scene, which for the past three years has been Tiny Creatures metier, featuring new works from new artists in the Los Angeles gallery circuit and the usual Tiny Creatures artists. The works on display will run the gamut of methods and media from painting and drawing to performance and video in a bonanza event spilling out to the Alvarado curbside. This last event will also coincide with the release of Tiny Creatures’ second zine, featuring articles by Hedi El Kholti (of Semiotexte Books), Matt Fishbeck (of Holy Shit), Tall Paul Gellman, Jason Grier and Julia Holter (co-owners of Human Ear Music), Softboiled Eggies on “How To Make A Donkey,” Alice Konitz and Michael Rashkow, and a horoscope by Claire Cronin, amongst others.

About Tiny Creatures:
Tiny Creatures started as a record label January of 2006, opening up its doors as an alternative to venues and galleries in Fall of that year. Tiny Creatures has since then hosted a dozen art openings and numerous other art and music events, including art talks, film screenings, workshops, and arts and crafts nights. Tiny Creatures has featured art work by Ariel Pink, Matt Fishbeck, Jason Yates, Jason Grier, No Age, and other underground bands, musicians, and artists, and has hosted events with The Smell, Human Ear Music, eighteen thirty gallery, and Family Bookstore. Tiny Creatures also functions as an affordable music school where students of all ages can learn about music theory, drums, piano, and guitar as well as a small bookstore curated by Semiotexte editor Hedi El Kholti. Tiny Creatures has recently curated a show at Mexicali Rose in Mexicali, Mexico, and was written up in Artforum as having one of the best art openings of 2007. Tiny Creatures will continue to exist in some form after the closing of its space on Alvarado.

Artists and Performers:
All artists and performers become a Tiny Creature once they have shown at Tiny Creatures. Therefore, the show always consists of Tiny Creatures. This show is unique in the sense that there are artists represented in the Los Angeles gallery circuit who have shown in prestigious institutions such as the Whitney. However, all have gravitated towards Tiny Creatures in some way or form and share certain interests with this space and this community. All have volunteered to participate in this last bonanza event in celebration of the Closing.

Kelly Coats, Rachel Detroit, Matt Fishbeck, Jason Grier, Paul Gellman, Skylar Haskard, Hedi El Kholti, Janet Kim, Alice Konitz, Eli Langer, Kevin Spanky Long, Jed Ochmanek, Katrin Pesch, Michael Rashkow, JC Rees, Mexicali Rose, Ariel Pink Rosenberg, Kate Stewart, Conor Thompson, Samuel Vasquez; and performances by Ry Rocklen, Softboiled Eggies, Nikki Obscure, Nite Jewel, Samuel and Alex, and the L.A. Fog
