The LP features tracks from The Ruby Suns, Lucky Dragons, Teengirl Fantasy,
Hecuba, White Rainbow and more!

Featuring tracks from The Ruby Suns, Lucky Dragons, Teengirl Fantasy,
Hecuba, White Rainbow and more!
MP3: Teengirl Fantasy - “Portofino” -
http://www.anticon.com/anthill/Teengirl_Fantasy_-_Portofino.mp3

In The Loop 5
Dublab’s In the Loop vinyl series continues with a new home on Anticon and fresh sounds from the most vivid music-makers around. Like the previous four installments - which have included celebrated names like
Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Caribou and Prefuse 73 - this fifth chapter rightly represents a wave of pure creativity: diverse gems from a shining circle of highly-inspired minds. Put it on and set your mind to spinning sublime. The Dublab non-profit radio collective and Anticon have been bumping beats and fists since the latter made its move to Los Angeles. Anticon is proud to inherit the Loop series from Dublab’s previous partner, Plug Research, and looks forward to promoting a cause close to its own beating heart: boundary-pushing music, no matter what its genre or neighborhood. Each In the Loop installment comes in two halves, naturally, and number five’s “Future Side” kicks off with tropical tones and vibrant rhythms from New Zealand’s Ruby Suns. “Kenya Dig It?” whips up a bounce and melody that’s self-propelled into the cosmos - astrologers and oracles beware! Next, dynamic young duo Teengirl Fantasy deliver “Portofino,” a pure explosion of unbridled energy. This track is like a micro-rave symphony, undulating with arpeggio and raw static. L.A. favorites Hecuba also contribute their artful magic. The beauty of “Miles Away” comes from its paced blossoming: a simple siren leads to a vocal/beat pulse that builds into a blast of laser light love. Last but not least, Tucson’ s Zackey Force Funk is a phenomenon set to blow up. His homemade grooves - a balance of raw chaos and beautiful soul - buzz stronger every day. “Bombs” is an apocalyptic lullaby set to a
lost Eno tape loop. As the smoke clears all will wonder where the world was before Zackey’s arrival.
FLIP!
The “Roots Side” is ushered in on the polyrhythms of Lucky Dragons’ kalimba-crafted psychedelia. These L.A. wizards have found modern motion in ancient material and the world has embraced them warmly for
it. “Are We Alright?” Yes, yes, yes we are. Next up, matthewdavid and OBA create musique concrète for lunar jump rope teams. Their bump-and-clank soundscape “Roomthumpr” is sure to shake speakers to a
state of zero gravity. Following that, Julia Holter of the incredible Human Ear Music collective contributes “Moto Perpetuo,” an exercise in elegant minimalism filled with essences of the far east and the far out. Hers is an avant-garde gem that soaks into souls with a feel that flows. Finally, Portland’s White Rainbow sets sleeping hearts swooning with “Mind Haze Is Clear Delight,” a perfect closing tune for this collection. Its fuzz-filled drone is a miracle of weightless wonder, and ensures that after the echoes soak in, you’ll flip this loop for another listen.
Dig in again!

NOTE: As with the previous volumes, In the Loop 5 features covers culled from the epic art experience, “Up
Our Sleeve: the Dublab covers project.” This chapter stars the sunny styles of Kyotarow Aoki and Moira Hahn.

- First collaborative release between Anticon and Los Angeles non-profit radio station and art collective Dublab.

- Fundraiser 12″ series that features either exclusive material or yet-to-be-released on vinyl songs.

- Previous volumes released on the Plug Research label included tracks from: Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, Dirty Projectors, Lavender Diamond, Dntel vs. the Postal Service, Prefuse 73, Caribou,

This 3-day event is curated by Shoghig Halajian and Alex Black of eighteen-thirty, and HumanEar’s Jason Grier. We are excited to once again make possible a memorable event on the eighteen-thirty rooftop.

*SATURDAY, AUGUST 1ST - LONGING*
“The will cannot will backwards; and that he cannot break time and time’s covetousness, that is the will’s loneliest melancholy.”

- Friedrich Nietzshce
Geneva Jacuzzi
Softboiled Eggies
Sister Mantos*
*
SATURDAY, AUGUST 15TH - EXCESS*
“The ambiguity of this human life is really that of mad laughter and of sobbing tears. It comes from the difficulty of harmonizing reason’s calculations with these tears… with this horrible laugh… In the violence
of the overcoming, in the disorder of my laughter and my sobbing, in the excess of raptures that shatter me, I seize on the similarity between a horror and a voluptuousness that goes beyond me, between an ultimate pain and an unbearable joy.”
- Georges Bataille

Julia Holter
Im Kino*
*
SATURDAY, AUGUST 29TH - CONTENTMENT*
“I have found a definition of the beautiful. It is something intense and sad, something a bit vague… a contradictory impression of an ardor… and a desire for life together with a bitterness which flows back upon them as if from a sense of deprivation and hopelessness. I do not pretend that joy cannot associate with Beauty, but I will maintain that joy is one of her most vulgar adornments, while Melancholy may be called her illustrious spouse, so much so that I can scarcely conceive a type of beauty which has nothing to do with sorrow.”
- Charles Baudelaire

*William Basinski
Mark So
Jason Grier
Installation by Lucky Dragons*

About the Performers:

*ARIEL PINK*is considered the most original and controversial voice in new pop music. Throughout the first decade of the 2000’s, he baffled and enthralled fans and critics in equal numbers, amassing just enough fame and glory to somehow pull off the role of retiring sage well before the mid-career mark.

*GENEVA JACUZZI*, like many of her kindred spirits in LA’s “avant-pop” scene, obsessively renders a fantastical world of sound in an absurdly compressed medium: cassette tape. Where she stands apart is in the emotional depth, sonic inventiveness and sheer personality evinced in every second of her live performances.

*SOFTBOILED EGGIES’* Janet Kim and Ben White founded and led what might well turn out to be one of the most influential art spaces in millenneal Los Angeles. Over the course of it’s 3 years, their Tiny Creatures gallery de-balkanized a fragmented landscape. They accomplished the same in music with their effortless combination of lullaby, post-punk, and bubblegum.

*SISTER MANTOS* is an active and hyper-active proponent of underground experimental dance music. His high energy performances and fractured beats often belie his thorough grounding in installation, sculpture and performance art, and in LA’s ever-resplendent queer counterculture.

*INDIAN JEWELRY* are legendary performers and songwriters whose intense live performances straddle the divide between droning vision music and seizure-inducing stage show.

*JOHN WEBSTER JOHNS* is a remarkable and rare example of the uncompromising artist. His work traverses emotional songwriting and classical orchestration, precision and chaos, dissonance and consonance in a way that only truly visionary art can: by retaining what satisfies the purpose, and discarding the rest.

*JULIA HOLTER*, composer, songwriter, polymath and student of medieval psychology, is largely responsible for creating HumanEar. As comfortable composing delicately scored ensemble pieces as she is pop anthems, she possesses a graceful understanding of the unities underpinning orchestration and emotion in music.

*IM KINO* are two classically trained musicians who graduated from the Los Angeles County School of the Arts. As life-long friends, they collaborate on stage to combine classical composition with pop sensibility.

*WILLIAM BASINSKI* is an internationally acclaimed performer and composer in experimental electronic sound. His haunting, long-duration soundscapes portray decay, nostalgia and rejuvenation with a daring economy of means.

*MARK SO* is by far one of the most prolific and remarkable composers working in the experimental tradition traced back to John Cage and Erik Satie. His gorgeously simple scores marry extremes of silence and duration with the poetic and narrative power representative of a truly accomplished art.

*JASON GRIER*, composer, computer programmer, polymath and theorist, is largely responsible for creating HumanEar. He has been the central, nearly silent, figure behind a number of developments in LA independent music culture. His music, like all his projects, employs an odd mix of technology, logic and fascination with human will.

*LUCKY DRAGONS* are about the birthing of new and temporary creatures–equal-power situations in which audience members cooperate amongst themselves, building up fragile networks held together by such light
things as skin contact, unfamiliar language, temporary logic, the spirit of celebration, and things that work but you don’t know why.

The Dog Star Orchestra is an annual festival organized by Michael Pisaro and which features new and classic works by a number of composers working in the experimental tradition.

Dog Star Orchestra presents a breathtaking collection of contemporary and classic experimental repertoire. Now in its fifth year, nearly 40 musicians and music lovers will be participating in this year’s events. Many of the 48 scheduled works have rarely, if ever been performed or recorded. This year, the festival will be archived in its entirety, here, at dogstarorchestra.org.

Highlights include a 6+ hour rendition of La Monte Young’s Composition 1960 No. 7, performed simultaneously with works by Pisaro and Tenney, and selections from Yoko Ono’s Grapefruit events for orchestra and Morton Feldman’s gorgeous piano repertoire.

Named partly as a nod to Stan Brakhage and partly to commemorate the looming “dog days” of summer in the high desert, Dog Star Orchestra is organized annually by acclaimed experimental composer Michael Pisaro. Each themed day - ostensibly, a casual, communal gathering of music lovers - challenges interpretation and listenership over the course of an immersive and intensive week of music-making.

Visit dogstarorchestra.org in the coming weeks to hear and see archival recordings and photography of the events.
